Mount Kailash and Manasarovar

Overview

Mount Kailash considered to be the most sacred mountain in the world rises to an altitude of 6714m and is one of the most elegant and entrancing peaks in Tibet. It is a great adventure in history, in landscape and in the faiths of Asia. For the traveller, this is a dream destination, almost inaccessible until just a few decades ago because of bad roads, political prohibitions, and the presence of bandits. But no Westerner has ever felt lonely in the area around Mount Kailash. Because of its religious associations, many Hindu, Buddhists, hermits and pilgrims have been drawn to the area of the mountain for the past two thousand years or so to see it, offer prayers, absolve sins, circumambulate it and meditate. South of Mount Kailash, across the base of the majestic Mount Gurla Mandhata, are the two lakes Manasarovar and Raksas Tal (lake). They are the highest bodies of fresh water in the world, with Manasarovar (330 sq. km), at 4558m, about fifteen meters higher than Raksas Tal.

During the trek there are great views of Tibet’s highest mountains, including mighty Mt. Shishapangma (8012m) and Paryang in the heart of western Tibet is where the four great rivers of south Asia diverge from their glacial sources around Mount Kailash. Camp right on the shores of Lake Mansarowar for perhaps the ultimate Tibetan sunset, pass the stunning Mayum-tso lake, climb to the Mayum La, where we are rewarded by a magnificent mountain panorama. The scenery along this section is some of the most beautiful of the entire journey and wonderful spot to watch the sunset and roll down the soft, dune-coloured sand. Toward the end of our journey we join the main Lhasa to Kathmandu Highway where we get to see Everest as the road climbs to the Lalung La (5124m) before descending and climbing again to the Tong La at 5120m. Our journey ends by crossing the Friendship Bridge, which spans the Bhote Koshi River and marks the Chinese - Nepalese border.
