Indigenous Peoples Trek

Indigenous Peoples Trek

To supply the high demand of non-commercialized eco-trekking routes and show the real Nepal, a new trail has been developed with the initiation of TAAN and many local organizations in the west of Ramechhap district, about 130km east of Kathmandu. The trail has been given a name of ‘Indigenous Peoples Trail’ (IP Trail) in honor of the six major ethnic settlements in the area. The Indigenous Peoples Trail offers a unique living exposure to one of the most culturally diverse areas of Nepal combined with the beautiful natural landscape of breathtaking Himalayan and mid-Hill panoramas. Sailung Peak in the north and the golden Sun Koshi River flowing along the south mark the start/end points of the IP Trail respectively. The trekkers are welcomed into the culture and lifestyle of indigenous communities including Sherpa, Newar, Thami, Tamang, Yolmo and Majhis in this lively cultural route. The two major religions in Nepal - Hinduism and Buddhism are ever present in the form of gods and goddesses, temples, stupas, gumbas, monasteries and sacred caves.

Trekking season for Indigenous Peoples Trail:
Trekking through the Indigenous Peoples Trail is possible throughout the year however the best times to trek considered are spring and autumn. The spring season starts from the beginning of March to end of May and the autumn season starts from the beginning of September to end of November. The days are sunny and warm here and the nights are not the freezing. It is not very cold in winter on this trail but the summers are wet. April and early May is a good time to see the trees bursting into bloom, with Rhododendrons, adding a spectacular splash of color to the landscape. The views are simply great after the summer monsoons have cleared the atmosphere of dust.

Experience Required:
We have categorized Indigenous Peoples Trail as medium grade trek and are suitable for passionate trekkers who have courage to walk at least 4-5 hours each day. You might even need to walk 5 to 6 hours or more on some days. However, if you have passions, good health with average physical fitness and self confidence, the Indigenous Peoples trek can be completed successfully. Regular exercising and jogging for some weeks prior to the trip is a good idea to enhance your strength and stability. If you have any previous hiking experience, that would be an asset. It is important that you consult with your doctor before making decision for this trek if you have any medical problems in the history. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lungs or any other serious disease should inform Trekking Encounters before booking the trek.
