Rara Lake

Overview

Rara Lake is the largest lake of Nepal covering an area of 106 sq km and sits at an altitude of about 3000m. In a region still relatively unexplored Rara Lake is situated in the remote far northwest in the Mugu District in the Rara National Park. Surrounded by alpine meadows and steep densely forested ridges the lake is stunningly beautiful and tranquil in its own natural wilderness. Across the deep clear waters of the lake lies the vista of Dolpo. Chuchemara Danda at 4,087 meters is the best vantage for stunning views of the lake the thickly forested hillsides and the snow-capped peaks around it. Other summits in the park area are Ruma kand (3,731 m.) and Malika Kand (3,444 m.), situated to the north of the lake. An abundance of wildlife can be found in the protected area and is an haven for bird watchers.

Although there are lodges in Jumla and a bunkhouse at the lake camping is more reliable and much more pleasant.

The best season is March to October.
