Kangchenjunga Base Camp |
OverviewKangchenjunga Base Camp in the north east region of Nepal is one of the most unspoilt trekking trails, first opened in 1988.and under the shadows of Kangchenjunga - the world's third highest peak (8595m). With the possible exception of Nanga Parbat in Pakistan, Kangchenjunga is the most massive and complex of the world’s highest peaks, having only around a 30% summit success rate; it is rightly so, steeped in mountaineering history. First climbed in 1955 by the British Charles Evans Team, this mountain is known sometimes as the ‘’Five Treasuries of the Snows’’. With five very distinctive peaks Kangchenjunga sits in a national park which corners Nepal, Sikkim India and Tibet, and is protected as a conservation area by the Nepal government and has been recognized by WWF as a Global Eco Region. The Himalayan animal species residing here include: red panda, black bear, musk deer, blue sheep, rhesus macaw and of course the elusive snow leopard. The flora is also inspiring with 1200 species of flowering plant, 69 types of orchid and 30 varieties of rhododendron. The sight of Kangchenjunga, seen from Pangpema the North base camp (5140M) is unforgettable, a worthy destination itself. Trek Classification
