Humla to Mount Kailash/Manasarovar |
OverviewThis astonishing journey will take you to Tibet’s mythical Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar and into the remote Humla valley in Nepal’s westernmost Tibetan frontier. In May 1993 the government of Nepal and China reached an agreement that allowed the first treks across the border between the two countries. While it had been a route for Nepalese pilgrims for years, foreign trekkers were never allowed to trek from Nepal into Tibet. The route involves strenuous overland driving trekking and camping through the remote and wild areas of both Tibet and Nepal. Located north of the main Himalayan chain, Mount Kailash (6,714 m) remains one of the World’s most sacred summits. No-one has ever been permitted to climb its virgin slopes and the summit remains un-trodden by man. It has been a place of pilgrimage for Hindus and Buddhists alike for the past two thousand years; they make the long journey to offer prayers absolve sins and to circumambulate around the mountain. South of Mount Kailash, across the base of the magnificent Mount Gurla Mandhata lays the two highest freshwater lakes in the world, Mansarovar (330 sq km / 4558m) and Rakkshas Tal (4538m). We fly from Kathmandu to Simikot, follow an old trading route used by Tibetans who, many years ago, sold valuable salt to Nepal and returned with grain, trek through alpine meadows, ancient villages and forested valleys a truly mystical tour.
