Dolpo |
OverviewIn the far north west of Nepal, Dolpo remains truly an isolated corner of Nepal, cut off by a series of high passes, closed by snow most of the year. Time has stood still here for centuries, so has the way of the inhabitants. It is truly fascinating and magnificent. The Dolpo Region has been open to trekkers since mid-989 and is located inside the Shey-Phoksundo National Park of mid-western Nepal. The Dolpo region is split between two very distinctive area’s Lower Dolpo and Upper Dolpo. Permits are required to enter both. The air strip at Juphal allows access. The main attraction of the area is the wild and pristine landscape, which is unlike other parts of the Nepal Himalayas. Geographically it is a part of the Tibetan Plateau and is generally dry, cold and sparsely vegetated. The finally preserved ecosystem encompasses a wild and wonderful variety of plants and wildlife and the park and particularly the northern part is home to many rare and endangered animal species including the snow leopard, musk deer, blue sheep, and the Tibetan wolf It is possible to complete a circuit that takes in the main attraction of the area, Shey Gompa as well as some of the scattered settlements inside the park. There is a great Tibetan influence here and the villagers of Tibetan stock are skilled traders taking their yak caravans between Tibet and Nepal. The villagers are well known to the outside world having been featured in Eric Vailli's movie, Caravan that was filmed in this region. A trek through Dolpo is an experience not easily forgotten, a lifetime experience. Trek Classification
