Ganesh Himal |
OverviewThere are five major groups of peaks between Kathmandu and Pokhara: Ganesh Himal, Langtang Himal, Manaslu, Hiunchuli and the large Annapurna Himalayan range. Ganesh Himal is a sub-range of the Himalayan mountain range consisting of several peaks over 7000m with uninhabited foothills running down to the south and west. It is famous for its unspoiled Tamang culture and spectacular mountain views. In March and April the mountainsides are red with the magnificent rhododendron blooms. You can visit Gorkha the home of King Prithivi Naryan Shah who fought many wars to unite the tiny kingdoms spread throughout the land now known as Nepal. His palace can be seen on the top of the hill at Gorkha. The area is also the homeland of the original Gorkha warriors. You can visit Ganesh Himal base camp where there are two lakes; black and white and twin waterfalls ganga and Jamuna a truly impressive sight. Within easy distance of Kathmandu this is a favourite route of trekkers although it is not as popular as Annapurna or Everest. No specific permit is needed to trek the Ganesh Himal area.
