OverviewSituated 12 km north of Kathmandu, The Shivapuri National Park (144sq km) is the main entrance of the trekking routes to Gosainkunda, Helambu, Nagarkot and the Langtang National Park and was given National Park status in 2002.The park is the major watershed for Kathmandu with several rivers supplying drinking water for the city. Situated between the subtropical and temperate climate zones the park is rich in flora and fauna, with sub tropical hardwood, oak, rhododendron and pine along with many species of mushrooms and a variety of orchids flourishing on the northern slopes. There is a large variety of butterflies and bird species nine of which are considered under threat and the wildlife found in the park includes sloth bear, jungle cat, leopard and monkeys. The park is spiritually significant with several religious and cultural heritage sites for the Hindus as well as Buddhists including peaks of Shivapuri, Manichur, Tarkeswor and the source of the Bagmati and Bishnumati rivers. The other famous shrines that are worth visiting are Budhanilkantha, Sundarimai and the Nagi monastery, which attract thousands of pilgrims during festive seasons. Our trek starts at Sundarijal and follows the water supply pipeline north up a steep stone stairway, continuing on the path through Tamang village and dense forest. The last leg of the journey takes us to Nagarkot a favourite destination for many visitors to Nepal and on our third and final day the trek takes us to Changunarayan the oldest temple in Nepal. This trek offers breathtaking views from the northern expanse of the park of the high Himalayas and from the southern slopes panoramic views of the Kathmandu valley Trek Classification
