Mt Makalu (8481m) the fifth highest mountain on earth, lies on the Nepal-Tibet border looking onto Nepal’s other major peaks to the east of Everest. Makalu Peak is known as the thrown of the gods.

Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Area established 1992 and covering 2330 sq km contains some of the last remaining areas of unspoiled forests and alpine meadows in Nepal. There are fabulous displays of wildflowers and exotic plants including many different varieties of orchid, primroses and rhododendrons along with abundant wildlife such as the endangered red panda, musk deer and leopard along with 400 identified bird species; at least 16 of these being extremely rare.
