Jomosom-Muktinath |
OverviewJomosom-Muktinath is a classic lodge trek in the Annapurna region of Nepal taking you from the lush green hillsides and rhododendron forests of the lower lying areas to the sparse dry terrain as you climb higher towards the Tibetan plateau. The inhabitants of the lower regions are Hindus while in the upper mountainous regions are Buddhists who are more Tibetan than Nepali. The trail is often covered with trains of donkeys and ponies travelling to Mustang and other areas in the north of Nepal.Starting from Jomosom also known as New Fort which extends over both banks of the Kali Gandaki River the trail follows the river which forms the deepest ravine in the world with the Annapurna mountain range on one side and Dhaulagiri massive - 7th highest mountain in the world on the other. Muktinath is a popular and sacred place for Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims and the temple has 108 water taps emerging from sacred water springs. Tatopani also popular for its hot water spring. Ghorepani is the settlement below the famed vantage point of Poonhill (3193m). Poonhill at sunrise is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the trek with beautiful panoramic views of the snow capped mountains of the Himalayas.
