Annapurna Circuit (Anti Clock)

Overview

The Annapurna Circuit trek is considered to be one of the most popular in Nepal. Not only does the route provide spectacular mountain scenery as it traverses between the North Himalayas and the Tibetan plateau, but it also passes through a number of very interesting villages located on the southern slopes of the Manaslu and Annapurna ranges. In the main, these are inhabited be members of the following ethnic groups which are mainly of the Hindu faith, the Gurungs, the Magars, the Chetris and the Newars. The first two groups provide large numbers of recruits for the famous Gurkha regiments. The upper regions of the aforementioned mountain ranges support dense forests of rhododendron and fir trees. On the trek while passing through the Manang valley, one will notice small crops of millet and wheat and small flocks of sheep and goats. As the people living in this area are of Tibetan Buddhist origin their lifestyle differs considerably from the Hindu ethnic groups previously mentioned. Midway through our trek we reach the township of Jomosom (also know as New Fort) with its many facilities including an airstrip and the largest habitat on the circuit since Besi-Sahar.

A few of the most unforgettable encounters on the trek - the Thorung-La pas, one of the largest passes, if not the largest in the world at 5416m (17,769ft). Muktinath an important pilgrimage town for both Hindu and Buddhists; views of the Dhaulagiri icefall; the Kali Gandaki River gorge which forms the deepest ravine in the world with the Annapurna mountain range on one side and Dhaulagiri massive; 7th highest mountain in the world on the other. Tatopani a natural hot spring and finally at Poonhill the spectacular sunrise and mountain views. When in Pokhara visit the International Mountain Museum and also the Gurkha Museum.
